It is my great pleasure to inform you that your work has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2018 International Photography Awards – Congratulations!
– 2018 Note –
Emmi with Wild Flowers, 2018, Ohio
In addition to nuclear families, the communications evolution through smart phones and e-mails, the decline in the marriage rate, an aging society with a low birthrate, a consumer culture led by the media that sets fashions and new products one after another, the Japanese are coming and going at a rate of knots.
The Japan where I was born and raised used to value simplicity, handling everything carefully and slowly, respecting the harmony of the people and keeping an eye on the children in a community. In the good old days, regardless of there being silver seats, the young, both men and women gave up their seats to the elderly on the bus and in the train. There were no shameless men in their prime sitting with their legs apart so as to avoid others sitting down next to them. Also, when I was waiting with the door held open at the department store for the person behind, the shoppers, without distinction of age and gender, ignored me and entered one by one. What a shame ! It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that I have never seen this level of rudeness with people in America.
During my time there, I was very interested in the Amish way of life, family values and work ethic, their solid belief and traditions, and cooperation in the community without the influence of the English world or modern technologies. Many people might be familiar with scenes from the movie WITNESS starring Harrison Ford.
Since I lived away from the states of IL, PA and OH, I couldn’t visit these communities very often, but tried to go there by air and rental car since 2011.
Two years have passed since I moved to Ohio from California in order to get to meet the ten children, after getting to know the Harris family who were registered as Amish on the internet. As a matter of fact, they are not Amish and do not belong to any denomination, and through this encounter with the family I have discovered some unexpected sects within Christianity, such as Amish, Bruderhof, Hutterite, Mennonite and German Baptist, consisting of immigrants from the Netherlands and Germany, who have explored their own doctrines and tradition. I truly appreciate Michael, this immediate and extended families giving me the opportunity to make the first step toward extending the horizon of my projects. The noteworthy factor is that the three lovely 16-,15- and 9- year- old-boys, built like upright green spring bamboos, work hard all day long to feed chickens and cattle, milking, mowing, making hays and so forth, and carry out more tasks than the owner of the house has assigned them. They truly enjoy working and want to be farmers. I have never seen such hard-working young boys, who don’t skimp on their work and take the shortest of breaks. I hope the family will be able to have their own property and house, and the boys can work toward their futures.
Additionally, I would like to show my gratitude for being able to observe and document the children. I will cherish the countless memories of moments we shared, such as the beauty of the vast seasonal wheat, cone and soy bean fields, birds watching, wild flower picking, lightning bugs balls and making a one-night-lantern, coloring love letters, making a lovely flower wreath on Mothers Day and so forth.
Amish Siblings at Church, 2017, Ohio
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to live in an Amish community this year. Indeed, life is a drama without a scenario. The old order Amish are not allowed to be photographed due to religious reasons. So, it is extremely difficult for me to take pictures of everyday photographs, even of children. Braveness and instant subtle eye contact are required.
However, I caught a one-in-a-million chance to watch the raising of a barn together with the community. As I have wanted to observe these symbolic traditional events, such as raising a house and sewing a quilt, I am grateful for my good fortune. Moreover, they did allow me to photograph the people preparing the meals for a wedding reception.
Furthermore, I became acquainted with a young Amish woman, and she convinced the people to let me join them in sewing a quilt at church. It was such a muggy day in September, and of course there was no air conditioning. The Amish women finished the knotting quickly and completed several pretty comforters in the morning. Then, we enjoyed a potluck lunch together. On the way home, I enjoyed a lovely buggy ride – the wind blowing from the soy bean fields which appeared like a field of yellow wild flowers. For me, photography means looking inwardly at myself in order to reach my goal of living a sincere and honest life. There is no precise answer, and yet it was a beautiful afternoon in which I felt a sense of fulfillment of my journey, regardless of the outcome.
On the other hand, I could fully understand why the summer vacation for Amish schools starts from May, unlike the English schedule. Summer is the busiest season for the Amish due to sowing seeds, vegetable and fruits crops such as cucumbers, zucchinis, eggplants, beans, tomatoes, onions, corn, strawberries, blueberries, watermelons, peaches, wheat and oats, and making the hay shacks. Amish boys often wear straw hats with a ragged and broken visor. Certainly most of us will rubbish them. Yet, the boys are quite well-off, they are the reverse of poor. The Amish has a great tradition of kinship with big families: to love the children and respect the old. They have their own land and houses. They are a self-sufficient society, without power, tap water and garbage collections, but they keep going despite what happens, even during times such as an economic crisis or war. The inhabitants of rental or mortgaged houses are probably mobile, and there are no guarantees that they will be secure forever. To me, the Amish community seems to be more affluent than the English.
Talia Picking Mulberries, 2018, Minnesota
Now I have two wonderful Hutterite families in MN. It takes about 13 hours to get there from Ohio in my car. My spouse and I visited them again this summer. We had a beautiful time with them, and they were so good and gentle with us. They have big hearts. The first couple is Leonard and Dora, whose children have already gone out into the world. Leonard has just retired from his responsible post and takes the leadership role for the next generation.
One Wednesday evening on a family day, we suggested to them that we dine out somewhere, and had supper at a cafe in the supermarket of a small town. Surprisingly, it cost less than 30 dollars for the four of us, so it was just our tiny way of showing gratitude to them for their warm hospitality. Nevertheless, they thanked us excessively and enjoyed a tasty meal. It shows their good personalities as devout Christians. They have lived in the community since its establishment, and were experienced in the way of the world. They don’t want unnecessary things and they handle things with care so that they last a long time, unlike consumers who waste things without thought. They practice the most important principles of Christianity in their daily life. They know what it means to be a good human and keep a pure mind.
The second friend is a good-natured young girl who teaches at Hutterite school. We became good friends through art talk. This beautiful daughter of honest parents reminds me of the good old days in Japan because of her modest and graceful manner, as well as her liquid blue eyes. Also, her parents Mike and Elma Decker, her uncle, and the lovely guys Daniel and Isaiah were full of good intentions. We felt really good to be held in the bosom of their warm hearts.
The first colony established enormous economic power through vast wind farms and multiple businesses. I had the impression of a kingdom created by the grandeur plan of German’s scrupulous wisdom and perfectionism for the devout christian to seek for freedom of faith. The second one, I would describe as a utopia in the bosom of nature created by devout christians to seek for freedom of faith. A moderate economic basis keeps an exquisite balance between a comfortable homely environment and a simple life. We joined the little children in picking chamomile and mulberries. Ripened sweet mulberries that I have never tasted were so appealing to me. Similarly, the children who are far from the chaotic world looked like innocent pretty angels. Surrounded by the blessings of nature, apple trees, the bees’ favorite red, white and yellow clovers and the wild flowers, we enjoyed the summer fields to their full potential. It was a really impressive and beautiful afternoon, like in pastoral Europe.
Beth’s English Garden, 2018, Pennsylvania
The third couple Harry and Beth made the right choices between their traditions and civilization, such as listening to classics, folk songs and contemporary music with historical and social lyrics. Watching TV news and reading the local newspaper to avoid, as the saying goes, the frog in the well does not know the ocean. In the old days, the Hutterite lifestyle and norms including German language sermons and overbearing rules were much strict. The intelligent couple, a businessman and ex-nurse, well-informed on how education is important for their children to broaden the horizons and nurture their faculty for thought. Their motto was not to focus merely on religious color, but to keep well-balanced common sense worthy of a Christian, and for personal growth.
I experienced wild blueberry hand-picked from big bushes for the first time in my life, and felt the great nature of America. Indeed it was a treasure island filled with abundant blueberries and we all were playful curious explorers. She and her daughter Betsy baked delicious blueberry pancakes for breakfast the following morning, and taught me how their treasured recipe made them soft and tasty. Frozen berries and fresh wild berries are totally different and good enough for me to become addicted to them.
I tasted the real pleasure of country life, surrounded by the singing creeks and forest which are home to the summer houses for weekend visitors from Philadelphia. Also, let’s give to thanks to the heavy rain which brought the blessing of nature.
Ripen Blueberries, 2018, Pennsylvania
Blueberries, 2018, Pennsylvania
I mentioned before in a Japanese photo essay book to show nice American people and the people’s tender gift of wit. This time they also gave me warm gifts. I received knitted room socks for winter from the elder Dora, hand made kitchen mittens and mats from younger Dora’s mother, and from Beth, a lot of fresh blueberries where she had taken time to remove tiny parts of the leaves, and Harry’s tasty special coffee to drink on the way home. Their kindness touched me tenderly and significantly.
Surprisingly, the people whom I am attracted to are unrelated to religion and sect. They never preach, talk or sing too much about it though. Their earnest and flexible attitudes show that they are devout Christians. This issue is common to that of the singer cannot fascinate the audience if he has too high an opinion of his voice.
The common ground among these three gentlemen, Leonard, Mike and Harry is that they are hardworking and have a strong sense of responsibility. And each is a man of his word, man among men. Similarly, the wives have a warm affection for their children, do chores efficiently, keep their house tidy and comfortable and cook meals at regular times.
We find something common with someone, and it might be that we are fascinated with his or her personal values, ethics, a certain knowledge, that they are moderate, not greedy and know how to enjoy life – beyond race and religion.
Kittens at Amish Barn, 2018, Ohio
My Amish and Hutterite projects are in progress. And what a coincidence to have a friend whose departed father, the late Mr. Kleinsasser, was a Hutterite priest in Manitoba.
He had strength, would not to be disheartened by any difficulties and endured a critical burn without complaining, and didn’t complain when the doctor diagnosed the amputation of both of his hands. However, his indomitable spirit overcame this, beyond the power of an ordinary person. Moreover, he challenged himself through being in constant rehab, his hands undaunted by their impracticable human limits. Then he was saved by a miracle. As a great priest, and as a human, he liked to say to the people “Where there’s a will there’s a way” as long as you never give up. He is a good example, both as a priest and as a human, that we can pray to God to help us when are in danger. Contrary to those people who invent a questionable religion for their own wicked ambition, he is full of the spirit of service and devotes himself to the people. Here is, quite literally, true Christianity in daily life. I would like to visit Manitoba someday.
Personally, I lost my beloved friend and have felt a deep sense of loss. In addition, I was confronted by some difficult family events this spring. Although now I have realized that if I live honestly and keep doing my best, without escaping from myself all the time, a glimmer of hope still shines. My life should probably involve looking into my inner self.
Finally, my first project to explore the Amish community had a lot of nice twists and turns, but gets back to its purpose while a new world opens up before me.
I will follow a leaf boat on the creek under the sunlight and through the trees, as though I were a child with excited curiosity. Yes, I appreciate being alive by the good intentions of many, beyond my insignificant ability, and I keep going.
– Ellen L Ball – Memoirs –
My respectful eternal lady, mother & sister in America and best friend Ellen passed away.
It’s still hard for me to accept the reality, and I have flashbacks to our happy days as though they were yesterday.
As I still cannot come to terms with my father’s death, it is too painful for me to say good-bye to those I love, one after another.
How much we shared together !
Photo shootings, chats, gallery walks, cafes, book stores, beaches…
I also often spent joyous afternoons at her house while enjoying her husband’s home made lunch and wine.
I have many things to learn from her, such as the black and white attire she wore to view art works at gallery receptions.
As I write my Japanese photo essay in Nice America, Her portraits photographed by Richard Avedon casually hanging on the wall,
but it’s been a year since I met her and discovered her glorious past.
She was always a humble and charming lady.
Her husband, painter Ian made these cards
She only loved silver, and was never interested in expensive jewelrery nor brand outfits.
Chieko, look ! I bought this at K-Mart; she was far from being a snob or someone who kept up with the Joneses.
She knew what it meant to be the heroine and play the supporting role in life, as she had learned as once an actress.
Nevertheless, her graceful behavior and manner, subtle scent of fragrance and minimalist approach to good fashion sense,
gave her such a presence.
Like a gorgeous peony flower with the common touch; it’s Ellen.
Unfortunately, leaving Miami, I didn’t have the chance to see her again for a long time,
despite her regular invitations to go to her most favorite place in New York together.
And I would like to take B&W pictures of the photogenic Chilean housekeeping woman at her brother in law’s residence.
Whenever she took a trip, to Europe, NY, and TX, she sent me postcards, and brought lovely notebooks back for me
on which to write my memorandum.
Here I have the hand-made photo book she gave to me, of images she photographed in New York during the holiday season.
How much she wanted to walk together in New York, to the title of『A Walk in the Central Park with Chieko』
She really loved playing tennis, but had been inactive due to bad knees, something that happened after we said our goodbyes.
Once I gave her supplements that were very popular in Japan, and she said they were a miracle and very effective.
However, she could not return to the tennis court.
Indeed, she was a very active woman, taking an interest in tennis, photography, art, classical music, campaigns, dog walks
and so forth.
So, too quiet a time at home might have accelerated her Alzheimer disease.
I have decided not to focus on her death because she lives with me forever.
Chieko, listen to mom..I can still hear her humorous tone.

*NEW BOOK – 道草 michi kusa :Touching Beauty in the Mundane -122 pages hardcover on Blurb, Nov. 2017
Listen to the contemplation of the magnificent nature around us,
the wind’s lullaby in the serenity of fall,
the whispering breeze dancing in the glistening sunlight.
See how the patina reflects the layers of the passage of time,
old diners displaying picture scrolls of happy times,
The Rembrandt ceiling light reflects a simple glass cup, prettier than Baccarat,
the elegant organic movements and compositions of old power lines depict live art,
the subtle hues of the fish at the store forming an art show,
Plants and streets on the morning walk always capture my heart.
Gentle gazes on children melt my body and spirit.
How graceful this simple and traditional way of life is !
Beauty and excitement in abundance surrounds me.
My appreciation of the mundane will never cease, like a fountain
while reflects my joy and appreciation to be alive.

I would like to thank Japanese Calligrapher Ungai Hara who has contributed to the chapter titles.

and subtle brush strokes play lyrical tunes.
I would like to offer my special thanks to the principal and teachers at Old Wooden Shirakawa Elementary School,
one of the Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. They courteously invited me to observe classes and have lunch together with
the children. If I could study at such a lovely school of only 55 students, I would happily go back to being a child again.
Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge Matsuno-Kai of the Kokomo Kabuki Preservation Society,
the Chief Priest of the Zen Temple Enkaku-ji, Mr. Motoji of Tokai Brewer
and the Tea Master Hisako whom I just met on the street in the historical old town of Imai-cho.
She acted as my guide through the town and made tea for me at her tea room. This was literally an unexpected
and happy once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
And finally, I would like to thank the many people I encountered, who surrounded me with warmth and reminded
me of the good old days in Japan.

Hanaya-Kitagawa Gallery is located in an ancient Japanese city of Nara, which is known for its cultural heritage and serene and mystical environment. I felt that this gallery, which is an old traditional house built in 1922 turned into an intimate art space, was the perfect place to showcase my latest project which consists of 45 spring-themed small size photographs.
